How To Create A Personal Time Capsule At Your Next Party

Creating a time capsule is a fun activity that could be the hit of your next party. You can make one for a special milestone occasion, like a first birthday, graduation or wedding shower. It's also a great project for a family reunion. But you don't really need a reason! Here's how: WHAT TO INCLUDE: Historical and cultural documents of the day Newspaper headlines and clippings Magazines like People, Time This week's TV guide Supermarket receipt with clearly marked prices Current top 40 music chart Pictures from magazines and internet of contemporary trends and fads Photos Personal landmarks - take pictures of meaningful places that may not be there years from now. Group photo (or individual snapshots) of each person contributing to the time capsule. Anything else you think might change or disappear. Notecards Have each of your guests write thoughts to the future person or persons opening the time capsule (anything from hopes & dreams to predictions of where they'll be in the future) List of favorites - if it's for one person (such as a graduation), it should be a list of their current favorites of everything imaginable - food, TV shows, movies, music, teams, hobbies, interests, etc). If it's for a group of people, they should all include their favorites. Trinkets Ask guests to bring something to add - small, but appropriate to the times. DO NOT ADD food, batteries, liquids or anything else that could leak and ruin the contents of the time capsule. THE TIME CAPSULE CONTAINER: The ideal time capsule container is sturdy, strong and will keep your contents cool and dry. Our vote goes to a large metal popcorn tin! Other options: plastic food storage containers and cookie tins (for smaller objects). INSIDE THE CONTAINER: Use acid free envelopes, zippered plastic bags and vacuum sealed bags to protect items that can deteriorate over time, such as photos, newspapers and letters. NEVER, EVER, EVER (WE MEAN NEVER), BURY YOUR TIME CAPSULE: Keep it tucked safe inside (the back of a closet is a good hiding place), away from the harsh outdoor elements THE GRAND FINALE: Before your guests leave, announce when the time capsule will be opened. There are no rules, here - decide when you want to have the great unveiling. Of course, make sure you let everyone know that they're invited back for that event!
