Here's some guidelines to help you decide when to mail your invitations so they are not too late (guests already have other plans) or too early (guests might forget).

These are just guidelines - they are not absolute rules. There is nothing wrong with throwing together a last minute party or celebration. But if you want to have a maximum turnout for your event, it's a good idea to be considerate and give your guests plenty of advance notice.
Of course, you'll want your potential guests to be available on the date you've chosen for your party. That's why it's important for them to find out about it as soon as possible, so they don't make other plans. This is especially true during the holidays, when there are many other parties and family activities in competition.
Your guests will also need planning time if they have to buy a gift, shop for clothes or travel from out of town. However, if you're arranging just a casual get together with local people who are not required to bring anything to the party, they won't need as much time.
The cutoff date for RSVP's is usually between 2 - 3 weeks before the event.
